Aerospace and Special Applications

Thermwood welcomes requests for aerospace, defense, government and special applications. While we do not build custom equipment, Thermwood has a highly diverse offering of standard systems and a wide variety of options, capabilities and software, so we have very successfully addressed a wide variety of complex requirements.

Although we generally focus our marketing on smaller companies and specific industrial applications, we build some of the most sophisticated CNC systems in existence. We use finite element analysis to design our machines, stress relieve all major weldments and laser calibrate every machine.

Our CNC control is arguably the most capable CNC on the market. It boasts extremely fast block processing time, servo closure measured in microseconds, maximum program size in the tens of gigabytes that can be executed without stopping and it has a unique feature that lets you do virtually anything you want.

We call it Advanced Function Language. It is a full function computer programming language that can operate within the standard CNC program. With it you can access and modify virtually every aspect of control operation, literally changing the control to suite your own unique requirements or even changing it during program execution using different control response for different areas of the part. You can also develop highly sophisticated and intelligent part programs. Program commands are available to read and modify virtually every machine control parameter. You can take measurements during program execution and use these to modify program execution. You can measure a part and automatically create a unique CNC program for that part within your CNC program. The use of variables, if-then and full math functions are supported.

The Advanced Function Language makes Thermwood CNC systems incredibly capable and flexible and allows us to address complex requirements without the high development cost normally involved with creating unique special purpose systems.

Thermwood's Model 70, five axis system has become a standard in the aerospace industry. With table sizes up to 10 x 60, and full five axis capability, it is a low cost option to machine tool systems which can cost two, three or four times as much. If you are machining non-ferrous metal, honeycomb or composites, or if you are machining large molds or patterns, the Model 70 is ideally suited.

While we do not directly publish accuracy tolerances (because they are subject to interpretation), we can run standard aerospace acceptance tests to agreed upon tolerances as part of a machine acceptance. Our primary concern is that the system we supply does your job successfully and acceptably.

We operate under a General Service Administration (GSA), MAS contract with the U.S Government. All Federal and DOD offices, District of Columbia, some state and local agencies and some approved commercial businesses are eligible to purchase from GSA schedules.

If you have special requirements or a challenging job to do, we would be happy to discuss these with you to see if a Thermwood system is the right choice.
